Brushing your teeth twice a day is vital to your continued oral health. However, it is also beneficial to support your brushing habit with regular, daily flossing.
Flossing is a type of interdental cleaning. This means you are removing plaque and food debris from in between your teeth. It’s pretty self-explanatory, and we’ve all done it, but let’s review the basics of proper technique.
First, take a piece of floss about 18 inches long and wind it around one finger on either hand. Then, gently slip the floss in between your front two teeth. Using gentle pressure, glide the floss back and forth in a sawing motion. This removes the plaque from between the teeth. Repeat for each tooth; use a clean section of floss for every tooth. The 18 inches should give you enough to use a new section every time.
If conventional flossing is difficult for you, talk to Dr. Roger Anderson about other approved interdental cleaners. These recommendations could include water flossers, pre-strung flossers, floss for sensitive gums, or dental picks specifically for this purpose. It is important that you use only interdental cleaners approved by the ADA that have been specifically designed for the purpose of cleaning between teeth.
It does not matter whether you floss before or after you brush, as long as you do it. If you are trying to start a habit of flossing, give yourself a non-food reward every week that floss every day.
