Nobody wants to suffer from bad breath, but most people do from time to time. Bad breath, which is also known as halitosis, has many causes, ranging from poor oral hygiene to gum disease to eating odorous foods. Dr. Roger Anderson and our team are happy to provide a few tips for combatting and preventing bad breath.

Stay Hydrated
Dry mouth occurs when there is not enough saliva flow in the mouth. As saliva helps clean your mouth by washing away food particles, it is necessary in preventing dry mouth. Be sure to drink lots of water throughout the day to help with saliva flow.

Clean Your Tongue
Bacteria that can cause bad breath can form on the tongue. Food particles and dead cells can also gather there. Use a tongue cleaner or your toothbrush to clean your tongue daily.

Be Wary of What You Eat & Drink
Foods that can cause bad breath include strong-tasting cheeses, garlic, and onions. Eat these foods in moderation to help prevent bad breath. Some drinks, like coffee and alcoholic drinks, can also cause halitosis. Try to avoid these as well.

Visit Our Dentist
Visiting us often for regular cleanings and recommended treatments is a great way to fight bad breath because these visits allow our dentist in Lakewood, Colorado, to diagnose any dental issues that may be contributing to bad breath, like tooth decay and gum disease. If you discuss bad breath with us, we can also decide if the cause is from something medical that you would need to see your regular doctor about.
